This is one of those times….
So the last few days, I’ve gotten several commission requests that just… ugh.
1. Gave 2 very small pictures, and when I asked for bigger ones, told me to google (I’m sorry, but that’s not my responsibility. You need to research and get me the pictures).
2. Asked for a top to be made. Said that they spent $30 on fabric for it at Joanns so it shouldn’t cost more than $30- $40 to be made. Like, what? Is my time completely worthless to you?
3. Asked for a skirt to be made. It’s full length and several layers of ruffles. She says she wants to spend about $50, which is probably about what materials would cost.
I wonder, are people just totally naive about how much things cost and how long things take, or do they just consider my time to be completely worthless because I’m not a “famous” cosplayer? Seriously, it drives me nuts. Even China isn’t going to be that cheap.
All my costumes are fully serged (well, unless it’s vinyl or something), I use high quality materials, and I have a college degree to back up my work. And honestly, I don’t think my prices are that expensive, all things considered. Comparable costumes are usually a couple hundred dollars more than mine.
It just drives me nuts.

the short of it is….people are just freaking stupid. :/ No one knows the value of handmade work these days because everything is automated. They probably don’t understand themselves how hard it is. They’re still jerks though.

Yeah, people see used costumes and think that price is normal. Making something special is completely different and people don’t figure in labor fees because they are jerks. My Rapunzel cost me $200 to make, and I wouldn’t sell it for less than $300.

No, people truly do not have any clue as to what time/materials are worth. Figure out your hourly rate, figure out how long it would take to do a project, and add it up accordingly.
